A Pennsylvania man has been sentenced to prison time after pleading guilty to abusing his dog, authorities said.

“It’s a miracle Ava survived,” said Adam Lamb, BVSPCA’s CEO. Chester County DA Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe credited BVSPCA and county prosecutors, saying, “the person responsible for torturing a helpless dog was brought to justice.”

Curtis Bacon, 34, of Coatesville, was sentenced on Nov. 8 to 13 to 60 months in prison and is ordered to pay restitution for his dog Ava’s veterinary care,  the Chester County District Attorney’s Office announced. Bacon is also permanently banned from owning animals or pets.

The investigation began in December 2023, when South Coatesville Police and Brandywine Valley SPCA (BVSPCA) Animal Protective Services (APS) officers obtained a search warrant after receiving a tip about possible abuse.

Upon arrival, they found Ava malnourished and missing her right rear leg, which appeared recently amputated. She also had an injured left eye, severe emaciation, and other fractures that had healed abnormally, according to the BVSPCA.

Thanks to BVSPCA’s swift response, Ava was treated for her injuries and is now thriving in her new home in West Chester Borough.
